Supported living

The Tongerlose Hoef, a national monument, is the former farm of Tongerlo Abbey. One of the buildings that had been added to the historic farmstead has been extended with two identical, barn-like volumes, each containing four supported-living apartments. The old section contains four more apartments as well as communal facilities and staff quarters. The existing building has been abstracted by painting the facades black. The two new wings are linked to the old building by glazed corridors, one continuous with it, the other at right angles to it. The extensions have larch-clad facades and a zinc roof. The guttering is set back into the roof plane, which gives the two new barns an exceptionally clean-cut outline.
